Introduction

Now for the plot!

Take a “true love waits” teenager (Lauren) who is passionately in love with Tyler. Mix in some problems — Lauren blames her difficulties with math on being born drug-addicted. She is a star volleyball player because she uses the volleyball to vent her anger at her dead mother. Lauren’s closest friend has herpes, the result of her one-time-only sexual intercourse experience. Add other teens with realistic lives, i.e., they have problems. Have an outstanding author (Marilyn Reynolds) make each character come alive, and you have a novel that is truly spell-binding. (The first time I [JWL] read it, I didn’t even go to the bathroom until I finished!) “I meant to have a simpler plot,” Marilyn commented, “but Lauren refused to be simple!”

This is partly why Marilyn’s novels are so popular with teens (including teens who claim they’ve never read a book until Detour for Emmy). These novels don’t offer a simplistic approach to the big screen of adolescents’ lives. For many teens, life simply is not simple! For Lauren, life is complicated by her anger at her parents for, as she believes, deserting her for drugs. Different complications come as she tries to reconcile her deep love for Tyler with her vow, at 14, to remain abstinent until marriage. How will Lauren work through these complications? You’ll have to read the book to find out!

Other titles in the True-to-Life Series include Detour for Emmy, Too Soon for Jeff, Telling, Beyond Dreams, Baby Help, and But What About Me?

Marilyn Reynolds is the author of seven young adult novels and a collection of short stories, all part of the "True-to-Life" from Hamilton High series. Her titles appear on a variety of American Library Association's "Best Books" lists, and are also found on the New York Public Library's lists of "Best Books for the Teen Age."

Drawing on decades of experience working with at-risk students in California alternative schools, Reynolds' takes on tough issues that permeate the lives of many of today's teens: abuse, teen pregnancy, racism, acquaintance rape, gay/lesbian harassment and bullying, school failure, sexual abstinence, and a myriad of other sub-issues.

What with the joys and demands of young children, and full-time teaching, Reynolds' writing was pretty much confined to grocery lists, to-do lists, and assignment sheets for student use. Then, on sabbatical earning a M.S. In Reading Education, she found time to take a Creative Writing class. A personal essay assignment turned into an op-ed piece that was published in the LOS ANGELES TIMES, proving to her that she could expand her writing genres beyond lists and assignments.

In addition to the LOS ANGELES TIMES, Reynolds' personal opinion essays have appeared in other national newspapers, such as the DALLAS MORNING NEWS, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, and the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Her work has also appeared in small literary magazines, professional journals, and anthologies.

Through her own reading, Reynolds' experienced laughter, insight, intellectual and emotional growth, and other indescribable benefits. She wanted her students also to receive such benefits. Hers would be the last English class ever for many of them. If she could send them on their way with the gift of a reading habit, they would leave with the gift of a lifetime. But after they read Go Ask Alice, and The Outsiders, and selected Judy Blume novels, then what? In an attempt to broaden her students' reading possibilities, Reynolds wrote Telling, the story of a twelve-year-old girl who was being molested by a neighbor. Seeing the responses of her students to this book encouraged Reynolds to write Detour for Emmy, the story of a girl who gets pregnant at the age of fifteen. Thus the "True-to-Life from Hamilton High" series was launched.

After a lifetime in southern California, Reynolds and her husband, Michael, now live in northern California, near Sacramento. She enjoys walks along the American River, movies, dinners out, and of course, reading. Her grandchildren and adult children keep her on her toes. She maintains a demanding exercise regimen in a desperate and futile attempt to counteract the ravages of time. She continues to work with at-risk students, and to solicit their help in keeping her stories realistic and believable.

Reviews

Having been born drug addicted, to an addict mother, 17-year-old Lauren is determined not to repeat her mother's mistakes. She has promised herself to say no to drugs and sex, but is finding the latter a challenge, as she faces increasing pressure from her longtime boyfriend, Tyler. The resentment she still harbors for her deceased mother and the reappearance of her long-absent father further complicate her life and negatively affect her schoolwork and relationships. Lauren's journey to self-discovery and self-love is filled with pitfalls and also surprising rewards. The seventh title in the series is characteristically informative and insightful, exploring difficult teen issues with honesty and a multifaceted perspective.

Reynolds' treatment of youth and their challenges, from sexual abstinence to mixed-race parentage, is compassionate, never condescending; the dialogue, situations, emotions, and behavior of the well-defined teen characters ring true. An engaging, thought-provoking read, recommended for reluctant reads.

10/99 ForeWord. Young Adult Fiction. If You Loved Me. Marilyn Reynolds.

In the seventh installment in the True-to-Life Series from Hamilton High, Reynolds tackles the touchy subject of teen sex vs. abstinence. Lauren, a senior at Hamilton High, has been dealing with "If you loved me . . ." ever since her drug-addicted mother died in the explosion of a methamphetamine lab and her grandmother took her in to raise at age five. Mother, if you loved me, why did you screw up your life by doing drugs? Why did you die and leave me?

Since her mother turned out to be a loser in Lauren's eyes, Lauren adopted a policy of no sex, no drugs, which had been easy to follow until Tyler came into her life: handsome, wonderful, white Tyler who loves kinky-haired, white/black/Chinese Lauren. No sex since Lauren was conceived accidentally herself and no drugs because she refuses to become her mother. But now Tyler has started to pressure Lauren to take their relationship to the next level of intimacy, and she's not sure she can resist the temptation to go further than heavy petting and keep her promise to respect herself. At the same time, a stranger from her past appears in Lauren's life to confuse her even more.

Through Lauren's everyday life at home and at school, through her interactions with her friends, classmates and teachers and through her intense, unreasoning anger at life, Reynolds smoothly presents all sides of the issue using her research with teens at an alternative school in California to stay abreast of teen angst and fads, leaving the final choice in the hands of Lauren. Reynolds' books have achieved national acclaim from the American Library Association, and provide a realistic alternative to the teen soap opera series blandness permeating the market.

ASAP: Advancing Solutions to Adolescent Pregnancy (Washington State's Teen Parent and Pregnancy Prevention Coalition.

I had intended to skim If You Loved Me, Marilyn Reynolds, Morning Glory Press, 1999. I suspected it would be still another simplistic formula for a safe sexual journey through adolescence. It is, instead, a riveting glimpse of the inner lives of hurting kids who are not as they appear. Reynolds is a story teller whose characters grab your attention and slow you down. Reynolds knows what most of us adults do not know. The best listeners among us do not know or have any idea of what goes on in the lives of adolescents. They hide themselves well. We are left to interpret their behavior and listen to the words they use to protect themselves. We then conclude what is wrong with them. We have to, don't we?

Their lives are so complicated, their relationships so tangled and the advice adults give often complicates rather than clarifies their confusion. Reynolds does let us know that kids watch us and our adult behavior. Her characters are keenly aware of the hypocritical stances of the adults in their lives. Ironically, her wisest character is an undereducated, naive and accepting grandmother who offers a dose of adult wisdom for all of us. The kids in If You Loved Me sort out relationships with parents who hurt their children by abandoning them and parents who hurt their children by smothering them. Reynold's high school students make mistakes about their friends similar to mistakes made about them by teachers and parents. This book ought to be assigned reading for anyone staked out in the argument about abstinence and contraception. There is enough drama to hook most readers and each chapter is a lesson plan in itself.
